In the late 1940’s the Japanese culture was introduced to the American style of comic book art by the occupying G.I.’s. Both the Western artwork and the narrative style (which varies greatly from Eastern storylines) have had a great influence on Japanese mangas (comics) and anime (cartoons) which still exists today. While most western narratives are heavily steeped in Christian morals and values, the Japanese stories tended to be immersed in mysticism and fatalism. The lighter comic tone mixed with dark fantasy of the early American animated features such as Walt Disney’s ‘Snow White’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ had a profound effect on later (more…)
